Youth Leadership Positions
The troop is scout-led. These are the jobs that lead it.
Elections are held each term for the Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leaders; the rest are appointed. Serving in a position of responsibility is also an advancement requirement for Star, Life, and Eagle, but the point is the practice: real jobs, real stakes, real leadership.
🎖️Senior Patrol Leader (SPL)
Elected by the whole troop to run it for a term: plans and leads troop meetings, chairs the Patrol Leaders' Council, and sets the tone on every outing. The top youth job: the Scoutmaster advises, the SPL leads.
🥈Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL)
The SPL's right hand: runs things when the SPL is absent and supervises the troop-level jobs below (Quartermaster, Scribe, Instructors, and more).
⛺Patrol Leader (PL)
Elected by his patrol to lead it: plans patrol meals and gear for campouts, represents the patrol at the Patrol Leaders' Council, and makes sure every member has a job and knows the plan.
🤝Assistant Patrol Leader (APL)
Backs up the Patrol Leader and steps in when he's away.
🧭Troop Guide
An experienced older scout assigned to the new-scout patrol: teaches the basics, smooths the first campouts, and is the new scout's first friendly face. The de facto patrol leader for new scouts learning the method.
🎒Quartermaster
Keeps the troop's gear inventory: issues tents, stoves, and patrol boxes before outings, checks them back in (clean and dry!), and reports what needs repair or replacement.
📝Scribe
The troop's record-keeper: attendance at meetings and the Patrol Leaders' Council, plus notes that keep plans honest week to week.
📸Historian
Collects photos and stories from outings and keeps the troop's memory: the scrapbook, the anniversary displays, the 'remember when.'
🪢Instructor
An older scout who teaches Scouting skills (knots, first aid, orienteering, cooking) at meetings and on the trail.
🐾Den Chief
Serves a Cub Scout den at a local pack: helps run den meetings, is a hero to eight-year-olds, and builds the bridge that brings Webelos to the troop.
🙏Chaplain Aide
Leads graces and reflections on campouts and plans the troop's participation in religious-emblem and interfaith programs.
🏹Order of the Arrow Representative
The troop's link to the OA lodge, Scouting's honor society, keeping members informed about lodge events and elections.
